Hurricane KATRINA


Hurricane Katrina has been upgraded to a category 5 strength hurricane. The eye or centre of the storm is directly on course to hit the heart of New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina is expected to pack storm surges or waves in excess of over 28 feet. Gulf weather conditions defined as warm ocean and light moist winds contribute to the development of massive hurricanes such as Katrina.

Katrina is expected to cause severe damage and destruction. Massive loss of life is a great possibility due to violent winds, torrential rains, and therefore severe flooding. People are being advised to flee Katrinas path immediately. For individuals without transportation or adequate means relief efforts are in place to deal with the massive displacement caused by this monster hurricane, Katrina.

Due to Katrina A curfew has been put into place, those disobeying the ordinance will be arrested. Airports and schools are shut down until further notice. Mandatory evacuation has been ordered for the city or New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina has created a state of emergency for a city that boasts a population of over 500 000 people.

With a metropolitan area of over 1.3 million 75 per cent of the city lies an average of 6 feet below sea level with some areas reaching 20 feet below sea level, Katrina is expected to completely submerge this gulf coast community.

Only three level 5 hurricanes have ever hit the United States since a record keeping system was put in place, hurricane Katrina is expected to possibly devastate New Orleans with flood waters overwhelming the levee system.
